Slow Down Move Over Day: CAA Niagara Urges Drivers to Help Protect Roadside Heroes
THOROLD, ON (May 12, 2025) — On May 14, 2025, CAA Niagara is marking Slow Down Move Over Day by calling on drivers across the region to take action in protecting tow truck drivers, emergency responders, and roadside workers—individuals who put their lives on the line every day to keep our roads safe.
Despite Ontario’s Slow Down, Move Over Law, many drivers still fail to give roadside workers the space and caution they need. Increased awareness is critical to preventing injuries and saving lives.
Key Messages:
- Slow Down, Move Over is the law—and it saves lives. Ontario’s Move Over law requires drivers to slow down and, if safe to do so, move over when passing stopped emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights. It’s not just a rule—it’s a vital act of road safety and respect.
- Roadside workers face real danger every day. Tow truck drivers, police officers, paramedics, and road crews work just feet from speeding traffic without the protection of barriers. One careless moment from a passing driver can result in injury—or worse.
- Drivers play an active role in roadside safety. Behind every flashing light is a person with a family. Slowing down and moving over provides a safe buffer zone and shows respect for those working to keep our roads safe.
- The consequences of not moving over are serious. Failing to comply with the law can result in fines starting at $490, three demerit points, and in repeat cases, jail time or license suspension.
- It’s a small act with a big impact. Taking a few seconds to reduce your speed or change lanes can mean the difference between life and death for our Roadside Heroes.
Let’s work together to spread the message and make our roads safer for everyone.
