CAA Niagara Launches 15th Worst Roads Campaign

Thorold, ON (March 20, 2018) – CAA Niagara kicked off the 15th Worst Roads campaign today with a request for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to advocate for better, safer roads in Niagara.

Representatives from local government, police services and the Niagara Region, got a first-hand experience of the good, the bad and the bumpy roads of Niagara during a 60-minute bus tour that highlighted roads needing improvement and showcasing roads that have been fixed over the last 15 years.

“It’s important we take a moment to recognize the success of the campaign, while also bringing awareness to the roads in Niagara that still need attention,” said Peter Van Hezewyk, CAA Niagara’s President and CEO. “On our “road show” this morning, we toured Queenston Street in St. Catharines and Stanley Avenue in Niagara Falls, that once topped our list, but have since been rebuilt.”

Last year more than 200 different roads in the Niagara region were nominated by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, with the majority of voters reporting “potholes and crumbling pavement” as the reason for selecting a road. Voters can also identify issues such as pedestrian and cycling safety, poor road signage, timing of traffic lights, or traffic congestion. The Worst Roads initiative gives the public a chance to voice their concerns about the state of roads in the region and across the province.

“This year we are focusing on the power of social media to amplify the message and engage the broader community,” Mr. Van Hezewyk added. “We are producing a series of videos, are encouraging residents to share photographs and are asking people to join the conversation by using #ONWorstRoads.”

CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign runs until April 13 and votes can be cast at www.CAAWorstRoads.com/Niagara. Voters will be entered to win a weekly prize of a $100 Kelsey's Gift Card and one person will win $2,500 worth of Petro-Canada gasoline.

CAA Niagara is a not-for-profit membership organization offering roadside assistance, travel, insurance and member savings. Founded in 1911 as the St. Catharines Automobile Club with just 16 members, CAA Niagara has grown to more than 128,000 members with five Niagara locations.
